FAT GIRLS HIKING- PORTLAND CHAPTER
When I’m not on a trail I’m painting, print making, spacing out, gardening, reading, camping, backpacking, talking to bees. My current favorite things are the new Dynasty, Fallon is a trip. The podcast “Why Won’t You Date Me”, honestly I’ll listen or watch anything Nicole Byer does. Reading “Her Body and Other Parties” by Carmen Maria Machado. If you read this book we need to talk, my mind is blown by how perfect this book is.
Who? How many people?
There are 2 group cabins that sleep 24 people total. Each group cabin has 6 rooms with 2 single beds (or a queen bed if you purchased that option). There are shared bathrooms and showers, a common living area with chairs, sofas and tables, a wood stove for heat, microwave and mini-fridge (the fridge is tiny and will not be available for storing everyone’s food/cooking. Please plan to bring your own cooler and ice for food storage)
Bathrooms & Showers
Each group cabin has a multi toilet stall bathroom and showers for the cabin to share. Don’t worry about being embarrassed if you have tummy troubles. We do too, so you won’t be tootin’ alone!
Heat/cooling/weather
April at Silver Falls National Park has a history of being temperate. With lows generally around 40 and highs around 72. With 14 days a month of rain in April, it’s likely to be damp but let’s keep our eyes on the weather when it gets closer.
The cabins have a woodstove for heating (and making tea?) and there is no AC (which is why we’re doin it in April!)
Accessibility info
The outdoors aren’t always the most accessible to everyone but we have tried to make it as easy as possible for folks.
– 1 group cabin is ADA accessible
– The main lodge/restaurant is accessible
– there is 1 waterfall hike that is paved and mostly flat
– hikes will be as slow with lots of breaks for resting as needed
* this is the first time we are doing a big group out here so it’s a bit of a test run to see just HOW accessible things actually are in real life
Renting Gear
If you don’t have certain camping items that you own but would like to have for this weekend, there are several places around town that rent out gear.
Food and drink options
Food & drink is not included in the price of the Glampout.
You can bring your own food, drink, cooler and cooking gear to make your own meals just like tent camping. Bring a grill or gas stove or use one of the camp fires around the property if you’re feeling really adventurous. There is no kitchen, but there is a microwave and a mini-fridge. However, do not plan on using the mini-fridge for storing food, it’s tiny and there won’t be room.
If you’re not so much into the camping cooking thing you can get some or all of your meals at the Big Leaf Coffeehouse and Grill across the meadow from our group cabins. (South Falls Cafe and Silver Falls Country Store also have full menus and are located in other parts of the park.) On the weekends the coffeehouse offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as beer, cider and wine.
For Thursday night, Beth will bring a vegan black bean chili to share with everyone. BYOToppings and side dishes!
If you can’t/don’t want chili be sure to eat before you arrive or bring something as the Cafe will be closed for dinner service on Thursday night.
Alcohol (and other things)
You’re all adults so we’ll leave it to you to make good choices. If you do embibe, you must be of legal age to do so and we ask that you enjoy responsibly and respectfully of the others in the group.
No smoking of any kind is allowed inside the cabins.
Please leave anything that’s not legal at home for this adventure weekend.
Covid policy
*These are the current protocols but will be amended based on preference of attendees and covid guidelines at the time of the event.
To be as safe as is reasonably possible we’ll be asking attendees to:
– Mask in indoor public spaces for the 5 days before the event
– Home test if having any symptoms or exposed to covid in the 10 days prior to the event
– At least 14 days since infection or negative test
– 1 group cabin can be setup as ‘masks required in public spaces’ if any attendee requests that option
Photo/video release policy
Please note that we’ll be taking photos and video clips to document the fun. We’ll share those images with you and with the Chub Hub and FGH groups. We may use them for showing off how much damn fun we had. They won’t be used or given out for use by anyone outside these organizations.

Arts & Crafts
There will be some fun artsy crafty things to do this weekend. We’ll have a cool group puzzle you can work on together, coloring books, pens and markers, drawing paper along with whatever you want to bring.
But the thing I’m most excited about is something called Nature Weaving!! Ellen will be showing us how to make this beautiful craft which is a form of macrame (yarns and fabric designs created by knotting) and using found objects from nature woven into the design.
We may have a few basic supplies to share with the group but if you’re interested in trying it out plan to bring items for you and/or sharing:
a pair of scissors
Dried flowers, long reeds or grasses, leaves, bark, feathers, moss etc. It’s all about textures!
Hiking Info
Hikes are subject to change based on interest and weather conditions.
Currently suggesting:
South Falls to the North Falls trailhead aka the Canyon trail
This hike will hit 8 of the parks 10 waterfalls! But you can easily join for just a portion of the hike and head back. The South falls loop trail is just a mile down and back up. There’s access to a bridge and a tail that leads behind the waterfall here!
Packing Suggestions
Sleeping- Bring anything that helps you have the best sleep! Since we’ll have roommates think about some of the things that will help you sleep like eye mask, cozy blanket that you can use when sitting in the common area or around the camp fire.
Clothes – It’s spring in Oregon and the weather can range from chilly and raining to warm and sunny. Have rain gear, layers and clothes that feel good when you’re hiking. As for other activities we’ll be doing yoga, hanging around campfires, stargazing (meteor showers are happening!) and lounging. Bring clothes that you feel cozy in.
Kitchen Stuff – I normally make instant coffee, soup cups, oatmeal cups, things that just require heating up water and no dishes. Personally I’m not big on doing a lot of cooking while camping and do my food prep at home. Some meals I eat while camping: pasta salad, bag salad with leftover tofu on top, and classic beef hotdog with tomato and pickle. I also don’t do dishes while I’m camping, I store my clean dishes in a camping kitchen box and put the dirty dishes (scrapped into the garbage) in a mesh laundry bag. My favorite grocery stores to shop at for camping are Trader Joes, Grocery Outlet and H-Mart.
